Cuffs

Cuffs is a cop drama show set in modern day Brighton. The two main characters are two cops Jake and Ryan. One thing that stood out at the start was Jake being gay. I think they made him gay to appeal to the gay community, they will appeal to it because they are being represented in a TV show.  The show seems quite serious with some very dark parts like suicide, racial abuse and child abduction. Despite its dark points the show can have its moments of humor and a lot of clever moments. The show seems quite realistic unlike a lot of cop dramas where every crime involves shoot out.

  1. Grade B
You have commented on one way in which the show engages some of the audience. You make a good point about the seriousness of the themes. To improve your grade, you will need to write in more detail and to support your answer with precise examples of evidence from the programme.
These are the questions that you should have answered:
What is the function of an opening sequence for a TV programme?
How did this opening sequence appeal to its audience?
What aspects of the title sequence tell a story about Brighton's diversity?
In the programme, how did spread of different characters engage the different strands of the mainstream audience?
Cuffs is before the watershed. How is this reflected in the handling of themes?
